Today my first baby turned 7. Yesterday we had a party at our house with some of Kate’s friends. I haven’t done any updated posts since we put the new flooring in (so much has happened) but our last minute decision to have the party at our house had us working overtime to try and get trim painted and up. It’s not done yet but it’s much better looking than how things were a couple of days ago. It’s wild because I actually think that we are really close to having things done with our house. Which would hopefully free up time to keep up on blog posts and other things.
Honestly I was so happy when Kate told me that she wanted a Bluey themed party, and that at 7 Bluey wasn’t too baby for her. I mean technically in the show Bluey is 6 when it starts and later turns 7. Bingo is the same age as Beckett too. Thankfully it’s a popular thing right now too because it was easy to buy for. I snagged this cute purple tulle dress at Kohls because Kate LOVES dresses and who doesn’t like having a new dress for a party? A couple days before my sweet brothers came over and helped tie balloons and played with the kids so they weren’t bored while we measured, cut, painted, nailed in trim, and cleaned for the party. I think everything came together nicely and we all had such a fun time. After all of Kate’s friends had left we took some pictures because I’m that mom, and really the kids love looking back through photos with me so they kinda get why I’m always taking pictures. I actually had created an album on my google photos just of my favorite Kate photos and videos and had that airplay on the tv as a slideshow.
Regularly I think about how many people say, “birthdays are just another day”, “I don’t look forward to getting another year older”, etc. and I am always stuck on how many people don’t get to live to be that old and how important it is to be grateful and to shower people with love on their day. Which Kate’s friends certainly did. Several of her friends wrote or drew birthday cards and it was just so special. It was a fun day. We borrowed a disco light from Kate and Beck’s preschool teacher for a dance mode party, played keepy uppey, destroyed a piƱata, pinned the tail on buttermilk, and of course had birthday cake ice cream. After we finished taking our pictures we slipped into our matching Christmas jammies, cuddled up on the couch and opened up one of Kate’s new gifts, which was a Bluey Scavenger Hunt game. Beck said it was his favorite game and kept asking to keep playing instead of watching a movie. We played three or four rounds and had side stitches from laughing so hard. I had a card that commanded me to get up and be a chicken, and another to act like a granny. After that we watched several episodes of Bluey and Justin and I cried because it’s just the sweetest and he specially picked the emotional ones, ha. I never want to forget this day.
I don’t have the photos from today done yet, and I’m sure I’ll do a separate post on our trip but we ended up skipping school today and headed to Chicago for our other gift to Kate. Her first gift was a papasan chair for her room – it’s beyond comfy and I’m excited to see it in her space once we move Beck’s bed back to his room. We started off our day with our traditional stack of pancakes covered in whip cream, sprinkles, and candles (of course). Then we loaded up and headed to Bluey’s house. We had told the kids that was what we were doing since it was gift. On the road we looked up some other stuff happening (I’ve got to stop waiting until the last minute on stuff) and I had told Justin I had always wanted to see the lights at Lincoln Park Zoo. Luckily after some refreshes of the webpage we were able to get tickets – free on Mondays, score! – and added it to the list as a surprise. Then we came across some videos on TikTok of The Ice Cream Museum, which is not at all like a museum, but an interactive exhibit which was so much fun! We really lucked out and had Bluey’s house and the Ice Cream Museum to ourselves. The zoo wasn’t very crowded either so extra perks on the day. We played HARD at Bluey’s and really loved that whole experience. Then headed over to the park to walk through the zoo and see the lights. It was beautiful. The Ice Cream Museum was even wilder because unlimited ice cream mixed with games and mazes. Justin ate ice cream that looked and tasted like a hotdog with mustard on it – gross! – and the kids swam in a pool of sprinkles. I really love the experiential gifts and hope this birthday made some core memories for our kids. I really just need time to slow down.
